Clear Stand

Hindustan Times : Aug. 01, 1993

Dear sir, — I would like draw your kind attention to wards The Hindustan Timesj magazine dated 18 Sun- , day, regarding pronouncement of “Talaq” three times according to Islamic Shariat (Muslim Personal Law) written by Firoz Bakht Ahined.
For more than a month “Talaq” is a burning topic for all magazines and newspapers. I don’t know why? Muslim shariah is 1425 years old and this issue is well-discussed in Islamic Shanah. Ahle Hadith Group has its own opinion while Hanafi and other jurisprudent Imams had given different opinions. Their opinion is based on the Holy Quran and Sunnah. As I am Hanafi, I also believe that the decision of all Imams is correct and what Ahle Hadith says is not correct. This stand of mine is very clear and well published in different national papers. What has been written on my behalf in The Hindustan Times, dated 18.7.1993 is not correct. “Talaq” or “Nikah” are purely Islamic issues and media (Press) should not interfere in these issues. Press should tackle other numerous evils of society. This decision is correct and according to the holy Quran and Sunnah, if a per son pronouces “Talaq” three times then the Nikah will end. The pronouncement may be in one sitting or in three sittings. I never favoured the AhIe Hadith stand. — Yours etc.,

Disagreement
Dear Sir, - Apropos the write-up by Mr. Osama Manzar Prof. Abul Hasan Siddiqui, the pro-Vice-Chancellor is absolutely correct in his view that there is not a single university in the country which can ‘be claimed free from outside elements. I fail to understand as to why only Prof. K. P. Singh, a Communist alone be given generalistic weightage, where as many other, much more senior teachers are always ignored and not allowed to air their secular views. I being the oldest old boy on the teaching staff having put in as long as 40 years active ser vice have never been contacted by Mr Manzar. Is it not ironical? on the AMU in the Sunday magazine, The Hindustan Times, dated 4.7.1993, 1 dis agree with the write-up in total Accepting the principle-based fact that a university must be, as far as possible, clean of all out-side criminal elements, it is still untrue that such a situation is suspected in the AMU for the first time. In the days of Mr Syed Hamid the atmospheric conditions in the residential halls of the AMU was worse and that was why Mr Syed Hamid had to run the AMU only with the help of police resulting in the loss of a precious life of a student by the revolver of Mr Siddhco the then SP City.
It is also not true that the police firing took place in the AMU for the first time. As far back as in 1964 during the days of late Nawab Ali Yawar Jung the then SP Aligarh, Mr Shunghloo ordered to open fire at AMU students right at the building of the AMU Students Union.

It must surprise Mr Osama Manzar to note that never before has any pro-Vice-Chancellor floated statute of the AMU as Prof. S. M. Yaha did. Yes, he did so to statute No. 9(v)(i) Chapter XI, Sec. 12(i) and 29(i) of the EC Ordinance that does make the AMU School’s Principals’ re commendation obligatory for an ad hoc appointment. It is regretted that the then PVC Prof. Yaha appointed one Mr Irshad as ad hoc teacher in the city high school without the principal’s re commendation.
Again it is not understandable as to why Prof. Yaha did not take a stand openly on matters of in- discipline, admissions and ‘work-culture’ coinage of high sounding terminology to ‘work culture’ is one thing and airing views and taking stands on principles is another. Even in the present interview I observe Prof. Yaha has in his normal manner twisted the matter. It is, indeed not expected of an almuni of the Alma Mater.
On the other hand the inter view of the present PVC Prof. Abul Ilasan Siddiqui, is crystal clear, to the point, bold wedded with frankness and sincerity be cause Prof. Abul Hasan Siddiqui doesn’t seem to have an ambi tion to become Vice-Chancellor over night.
It is easier to level charges of bribery even against the Hon’ble Prime Minister but is impossible to prove them substantially. So is the case with the AMU at pre sent. Those having lived in glass houses have been constantly throwing stones at those who have, all along, a sincerely clear record. It is sadder that Hon’ble EC members have joined hands with those who have only vested interest and as much I would ask Mr Waseem an EC member and a student of mine not to forget that it is only due to his teachers and Alma Mater that he is now the EC member and therefore he must shun from exhibiting the extra weight as EC member by forcing the Vice-Chancellor to act even against Supreme Court rulings as Mr Waseem wanted the VC to bring every strict- honest-officer of the AMU to; dock. Rising from the lowest’ place of society to the highest does demand thankfulness to God and respect to teachers in stead of humiliating them.
It has been the traditional temperament of the AMU to accord a red carpet welcome to the new Vice-Chancellor but call him names later when the same VC refuses to bow down before vested interests.
In fact, the present law and order situation on the AMU campus undoubtedly is alarming and calls for the tightest administration and strictest attitude of the Vice-Chancellor and pro- Vice-Chancellor towards both the students and teachers alike, stricter towards the latter ones who are the real responsible people for the deterioration of discipline in the campus.
Despite this, I strongly feel it is a domestic matter which must be left to us to be tackled.
I, therefore, conclusively appeal to all the well wishers of the AMU not to politicise the AMU affair to accommodate the vested interests specially of fundamentalists as well as progressives alike.
I wish the Alma Mater will restore its good old days speedily.
—Yours etc.
