Independent : 7 August, 1990
Staff Reporter Due to improper maintenance and in absence of any repair work over the years, a large chunk of the rear side of the historical Jagannathpur temple collapsed today at 1030 am. No one was however hurt. The mandir which has endured he wear and tear of three centuries was built in the year 1691 by Thakur Aeni Nath Sahdev third son of Maharaja Ram Shah. Almost three hundred years old temple had come to symbolise the religious aspirations of the Ranchi people who thronged it all year round. The persons near the temple expresses fears that if soon something is not done the concerning authorities to repair the cracks present on the existing walls of the temple the day is not far off when the people in Ranchi would be deprived of this monument of historical importance. According to the pujari Pandit Somnath Tiwan the temple showed cracks almost 15 yeas back but. never any extensive repair works were undertaken save some minor patch works. And all the minor patch works could not give the temple a fresh lease of life which ultimately resulted in subsidence of a portion today. It may be recalled that innermost part of the Mandir has been closed for the devotees for quite some years. The inner side of the mandir is in such a dilapidated state that it was forbidden for the devotees as a precautionary measure, claimed the sources. The temple which is being run by Jagannathpur mandir nyas Samiti has the Deputy Commissioner, and the Chairman cum Managing Director, of the HEC as its trustees. However no one from the trust had visited the temple till 3 PM today.
