MOHARRAM
Independent : August 2, 1990
Osama Manzar “If there is no scope for the betterment of condition and the problems remain unsolved even after many compromises, then, for the sake of the truth and just, it is better to rule out the wrong and unjust by force.” - Imam Hussain The history is replete with stories in which heroes have always risen to vanqnish the villains symbolising he victory of the right over the wrong. Likewise, the Islamic history is full of heroic stories. The battle of ‘Karbala’ is considered to be the greatest of all. Mobartam is. an occasion that reminds us of the greatest martyr of the Islamic history - Hazrat Imam Hussain who along with his followers lost his life in the battle of Karbala.’ Moharram-ut-Harain- the first month of the Arabic calendar the 10th day of which the battle between Hussain and Yazid broke out Ya2id was the ‘Khalifa’ of the time. The practice of ‘Khilafat’ had come in vogue to head the community after the demise of Hazarat Mohammed, the lest prophet of Islam. The oppression and exploitation of the weak and the poor had come to their worst under the ‘Khilafat’ of Yazid. The principles of ethnics and morality preached by the prophet Mohammed had begun fading. At that juncture, Hazarat Imam Hussain, the grandson of prophet Mohammed rose to protest against the oppression of Yazid Khulafat. Yazid and his goons tried their heart out to placate and woo Hussain with all the dirty tricks of diplomacy and politics, but of no avail. The righteousness of Hussain did not compromise with Yazid as, for the right cannot mix with the wrong. At last on the 10th day of Moharram ut-Harem the bloodiest battle of the Islam was staged. Both the Yazids and Hussains.lined up for the show down in the battle field of Karbala. Hussain died a martyr’s death. Hussain was beheaded by Shamar Bin Ziljosh. Unlike mythology where the right al ways won over the wrong; the villian became the victor in the battle. Imam Hussajn who sacrificed his life for upholding righteousness is remembered as the greatest martyr in the Islamic history. On the occasion of Moharram, all Muslims pay tribute to the martyr. The first ten days of Moharram Is most mournful as most mournful as during period Hussain and his followers suffered most at the hands of Yazid and his goons. To mown the death of their Martyr Muslims beat their chests and shout “Ya Hussain! Ya Hussain! The poor are fed and prayers are offered that day.
